He used all kinds of different techniques engraving had to offer (engraving, woodcutting, lithography) with impressive results. Having studied in depth the ways of faithful rendering of the most diverse materials (flesh, fabric, plants) with the most different means (oils, watercolors, engraving) resulted, through an abstract process, in a painting that renders the deepest essence of nature, with no obvious details, and an engraving where the brightest colors are present using only black. Apart from the numerous paintings and engravings he has crafted, he has also artistically crafted or illustrated, with engravings or drawings, over 200 Greek book publications. He has also created dozens of posters for social events.

Varlamos was dedicated to painting, but mainly to engraving, and was one of the few Greek artists who distinguished himself in all its forms, with particular emphasis on woodcarving. In fact, some of his finest works are devoted to flowers, which he depicted with very great subtlety. His choice of techniques were based on his talent in craftsmanship and the assimilation of elements from the aesthetics of the 1930s. Over time, he has shaped his personal artistic idiom, with the main features of pure design and the simplicity of compositions that highlight the beauty of nature and people in their longer-lasting dimension.
