As the art historian Giannis Kolokotronis, a professor at the Democritus University of Thrace, writes, “For more than fifteen years, Stelios Gavalas invented and continually enriched an artistic vocabulary of utopian art to infiltrate the dreams and desires of people. We recall his utopian effort in the series ‘Beyond the Sea’ (2001, Expression Gallery), to capture the sea in suitcases, old trunks, boats, and mailbags, like Xerxes who ordered his soldiers to whip the waters of the Hellespont.”
