Stamos Theodoros (1922-1997)
He was born in New York, in 1922. He has studied at the American Artists School. In 1951 he co-signed the manifesto of an avant-garde movement, later known as “abstract expressionism”. This famous New York group (including J. Pollock, B. Newman, M. Rothko and W. De Kooning), who were then given the negative characterization “The Irritables”, wrote an open letter which was published on the front page of the “New York Times”, declaring their resent towards the Director and the art critics of the New York Metropolitan Museum, regarding the “American Art Today” exhibition. Theodoros Stamos was the youngest among them. In 1970, his close friend, Mark Rothko, committed suicide. This tragic event shook him deeply and decided to return to Greece, spending his time between New York and Lefkada. His works are exhibited in some of the greatest museums, in Europe and the United States, as well as in many private collections.
