Solo Exhibition “Meeting – Memories” Apostolos Chantzaras
«Meeting-Memories» is the title of Apostolos’s Chantzaras solo exhibition, which will be hosted at Sianti Gallery from 12 November to 4 December 2021. As the artist notes, the unity of his works with historical memory for the year ‘21 is the expression of a complex visual world with a social, historical but mainly symbolic character.
Vassiliki Sianti at a mini interview with Apostolos Chantzaras
Apostolos Chantzaras characteristically states: “My works with references to ΄21 mean to me more than a painting form or a modern design. It is an Epic. I was born in Agrinio, Etoloakarnania, where for some people, the heroes are honored and even come to life through folk songs and traditions. The festival of Ai Symios in Messolonghi is the most important component of our cultural identity. My father painted the icons of the monastery emphasizing the religious character. The companies of the riders, the horsemen meet every year in a revival ritual. Accompanied by drums, they proceed to a representation of the ecstatic dances with their hands up, dragging the tsamiko. And then Earth and Heaven become one! The Hero pierces them!
I paint the riders with the hooves of the horses raised, because in its strike you may feel that the Earth and the whole World will move! The relationship between the horse and the rider was a relationship between relatives. They shared a common life! From Markos Botsaris to Lord Bayron… the First! There are some left to continue! What they found is revived with a festival! So that the Epic is not lost and our Soul is also lost! And so we will happen to reciprocate! With hands up, let’s touch!!».
By her side Managing Director of the gallery, Vassiliki Sianti characteristically notes: «In this section Apostolos works, small miracles are revealed, memories are brought to life and placed in the present. Symbols of glorious times of the past are part of a modern dynamic painting. The bodies of the heroes are muscular and robust, they refer to everyday people, who fight for everything that belongs to them. Their penetrating gaze captivates the viewer, highlighting a new perspective. It, however, maintains the respect for the old symbol in a modern Art. The colors of Chantzaras are so vivid and at the same time so deafening that they leave us no choice but to integrate Art into our lives».
