The nine ancient Greek goddesses-muses, including Terpsichore, were considered patrons of music, dance, poetry, prose, philosophy as well as any spiritual and artistic event. The aforementioned Terpsichore, daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne, was tasked with protecting lyric poetry, courtly art and often orchestral music, i.e. dance.
