Giorgos Ioannou (1926-2017) was a Greek painter and engraver. Born in 1926 in Athens, he is considered to be the main representative and leader of Pop Art in Greece.
In his work, which moves between the lines of pop art and comics with diffuse critical acclaim, has created a distinctive personal idiom. Interested in the scenery, still life, the interior as well as the human form, he followed in his earlier works the perceptions of Impressionism. Then, adopting pop art features and using the comics technique, he turned to the satire of social and political reality, creating compositions with a surreal atmosphere and symbolic hints.
