Exhibition "ONCE AGAIN, LET US SUMMON... LIBERTY"

On Wednesday, March 24, 2021, Sianti Gallery is presenting online the group exhibition “Once again, let us summon… liberty!” in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution (1821-2021).

As Art historian, Luisa Karapidaki, notes: Oh! Brave and greathearted Greeks, once again let us summon liberty to the classical country of Greece. Let us do battle between Marathon and Thermopylae. Let us fight over the graves of our Forefathers who fought and died there for our freedom…”

Those words, spoken by Alexander Ypsilantis during the famous “Fight for Faith and Country” speech on February 24, 1821, inspired us to invite twenty-one visual artists for an exhibition of considerable historical range. Their works take us to a journey through the Greek history since 1821, with scenes of victory and defeat, symbols and symbolisms, epic images of heroes and heroic deeds, bitter moments, as well as glorious ones, stories both told and untold. Those contemporary visual artists, each with his/her own special artistic language, either realistic or connotative, poetic, surrealistic, full of semantic innuendos or descriptive narrations, represent an extensive range of artistic expression proving the continuity of our cultural history. Iconic images reintroduce intangible values, while historic inheritance is being transformed through visual creation to a unique experience for all viewers”.

On her part, Vasiliki Sianti, Managing Director of the Sianti Gallery, describes the value of liberty as expressed through this symbolic exhibition:

“Aspiring to present our viewers with something of historic, as well as contemporary value, we have extended an invitation to twenty-one visual artists, challenging them to smash the cuffs of conventionality. Taking the Revolution of 1921 as their starting point, our artists urge us to yearn once again for liberty, to feel it in our breath. As Pablo Neruda once said: “You may cut all the flowers, but you can’t stop the coming of Spring”.
