Lila Belivanaki presents here a complex Totem consisting of painted compositions. The work “Ototeman-In Memoriam” includes elements of two different cultures and manages to tie them together in a harmonious visual presentation. The individual works, which also function independently, are arranged in a Totem formation. Their names have been chosen to symbolize the sacred animals that the Indian tribes placed in the carvings. As the Indians gave character and hierarchy to the totem animals, so the depicted heroes mentally approach the titles of the works. Totems were something of a tribal flag, they put it in context, “spoke” of it and its “beliefs”. The structure of Belivanaki’s material painting is extremely complex, from the construction and materials she incorporates, the constant references to the digital and online world as well as her conversations with Society and History in her subject matter: Street Fighting Men (Street Fighting Men according to the Rolling Stones), Housewives, Fashion Victims, unspecified characters of our time.
