Sianti Gallery inaugurates on Friday, March 6 at 19:00 the group painting exhibition “Beyond the Horizon, Memory”, bringing into dialogue three distinct trajectories of contemporary Greek painting: Dimosthenis Kokkinidis, Dimitris Koukos and Sotiris Sorogas.
The exhibition is curated by art historian Giorgos Mylonas, who describes it as “a proposal for re-examining the act of seeing.”
Three artists.
Three different approaches to the same place with landscape and sea functioning as a shared axis. What ultimately connects them, however, is memory not as nostalgia, but as an active condition of perception and understanding of the world.
All three artists studied under Yannis Moralis, yet each developed an autonomous and deeply personal artistic path. Their painting does not end with representation; it
transforms into reflection on duration, on gaze, on lived experience. In Kokkinidis’ work, the human figure and the sea construct a space of historical and existential tension. His figures, often placed before an open horizon, do not narrate specific stories; rather, they convey the persistence of a relationship that transforms over time into collective experience. Sorogas turns to minimal elements: stones, walls, worn surfaces. Through persistent observation, his subjects are released from mere description and acquire the gravity of memory. His painting does not simply depict an object; it captures the duration embedded within it. In Koukos’ work, the focus shifts to atmosphere. The landscape, often inspired by the Aegean, is rendered through light and color, in direct dialogue with nature and the act of painting itself. The gesture retains the intensity of the moment, transforming experience into an inner landscape.
Although the exhibition shares landscape as its thematic axis, the emphasis lies not in its representation but in the different ways each artist experiences and translates it into painting. Beyond the visible horizon emerges the one each of us carries within.
As curator Giorgos Mylonas notes: “The encounter with these three distinguished painters at Sianti Gallery reveals a shared existential relationship with painting, where the image functions as a means of self-awareness and consciousness of the world. For Kokkinidis, Sorogas and Koukos, painting is not an exercise in style but a way of understanding experience — as memory, as duration, as an immediate awareness of the present.”
