The myth of the olive tree<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Pelasgian myth recounts how the city of Athens was named after a goddess of ancient\u00a0Greece.\u00a0In older times, the city of Athens was called Kekropia, after its king, Kekropas. Although\u00a0Kekropas was a serpentlike mythical being, he was a benevolent king and the people of\u00a0Kekropia respected and obeyed him. But the ancient gods of Greece often meddled in\u00a0human affairs, demanding the bestowment of cities, human spouses, even the fruits of\u00a0human labor. Thus, the goddess Athena quarreled with god Poseidon over the sovereignty of\u00a0Kekropia. They invited king Kekropas to judge their argument, calling upon the rest of the\u00a0Olympian gods to attend their \u201cfight\u201d, which was held at the Acropolis Hill. The first
\ncontestant was Poseidon, who stroke the ground with his trident and a spurt of sea water\u00a0created a small lake which was given the name Erechtheida: his gift to the people of\u00a0Kekropia was water. Then it was Athena\u2019s turn to plant a young olive tree on a rock, which\u00a0blossomed instantly, offering its fruits: this tree was her gift to the Kekropean people. When\u00a0both gods had presented their gifts, Zeus announced the end of the contest and invited the\u00a0rest of the gods, along with king Kekropas to make their verdict. Kekropas argued in his mind\u00a0that his city was surrounded by water, rendering Poseidon\u2019s gift somewhat redundant.\u00a0Athena\u2019s gift, on the other hand, didn\u2019t need much water in order to make fruits and feed\u00a0the people. Thus he declared the goddess Athena as the winner and the city was named\u00a0Athens in her honor. As for that first olive tree, according to the legend it survived long after\u00a0the godly contest, never failing to meet the city\u2019s increasing needs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
