Guarantee authenticity
The dominant myth of “Greekness”, the belief in the perpetual Greek values, which, according to the ideology of the well known generation, provided a guarantee of authenticity and citizenship in the creation of a Greek artist, seemed to be a compass in the search for Alekos Fassianos. His childhood, spent in the neighborhood of Plaka in the shadow of the Acropolis, his philologist mother and his tenure at Yannis Moralis’ workshop at the School of Fine Arts, had to act as catalysts, accelerating this orientation. The beloved teacher, Moralis, the younger and most sober representative of the Generation of the Thirties, was supposed to encourage the conversion of the gifted student into antiquity. Indeed, Moralis is the only painter of his generation who studied and assimilated the ethos, style and form of ancient art as delivered to us by the tombstones and the painting of Pompeii.
